Sustainable Schools

  Little Green Fingers Gardening Club

Green Day 09

Our Sustainable Schools programme is working to make

Moseley C of E School a model of sustainability for schools

and for the Moseley and Kings Heath community

We are working to introduce measurable change in the following areas:

Food and Drink

* National Healthy Schools Silver Standard (currently at Bronze)

* Use of the school grounds for growing food (an allotment has been constructed at the side of the playing field and a popular and successful gardening club is making use of it to grow vegetables)

Energy and water

*An energy audit has been carried out on the school and analysis is now being done with a view to reducing energy use without compromising the children’s environment

* One of the energy reduction measures under consideration is better control of classroom temperature through the fitting of individual thermostats on each radiator.  The school is currently getting advice on how to achieve this at an acceptable level of cost

Biodiversity, buildings and grounds

*Paths cleared in the woodland area bordering School Rd

* Nestboxes put up, one with a webcam
*Flowers in school grounds (some planted by Year 1); Moseley in Bloom judges to visit school and meet pupils

Becoming a Forest School

*One teacher has undergone Level 3 Forest School Practitioner training

*The school will be providing Forest School programmes for its children as well as for children in its schools cluster

Purchasing and Waste

*Paper and bottles now being recycled

*Plans to compost vegetable waste, shredded paper

Local well-being – better engagement with local community organisations

*Working with Kings Heath School to improve conditions for walkers and cyclists on School Rd

* Supporting Moseley in Bloom (see Biodiversity above)

Travel and traffic

* We became Birmingham’s first Bike-It school last year

* Engaged with Birmingham City Council, local councillors, Lynne Jones MP and local police on making School Rd safer.

The above structure is based on the DCSF Sustainable Schools Framework.
