Forest School

What is Forest School?

Forest School entails regular and long term visits to a risk assessed woodland area where children participate in activities and games designed to build self-esteem, communication skills, independence and a range of life skills through the appreciation of the natural environment.

Forest School supports physical and emotional development through outdoor play. Activities also reinforce and extend learning that takes place in the classroom.

Tools are sometimes used by the children. Professionally qualified Leaders ensure that all relevant policies and procedures are in place to run a safe and effective Forest School.

Forest School allow children of all ages to have the opportunity to learn about the natural environment, how to handle risks and most importantly to use their own initiative to solve problems and co-operate with others.

Forest Schools originated in Scandinavia in the 1950s for pre-school children and had a profound positive effect on the children’s behaviour, confidence, concentration, self esteem and health. Forest School was introduced to the UK in the 1990s.
